One of my favorite parts of an in-home newborn session is getting a little peek into the space a family has created for their new baby.
Every nursery is different. Some are completely finished before baby arrives, while others are still very much a work in progress—and both are perfect. These sessions are about documenting what this season of life actually looks and feels like.
After photographing so many families in their homes, though, there are definitely a few baby items I find myself seeing again and again.
One of them is the Keekaroo Peanut Changer.
A Familiar Sight in the Nursery
During lifestyle newborn sessions, we often spend at least a little time in the nursery. It might be snuggling together in the rocking chair, standing beside the crib, or simply photographing all those tiny details parents so carefully chose while waiting for their baby.
And tucked on top of the dresser in so many of those nurseries is this changing pad.
I completely understand why.
It’s simple, neutral, and doesn’t add a lot of visual clutter to the room. More importantly, it’s one of those nursery pieces that’s actually meant for everyday life.
Simple Doesn’t Mean Less Beautiful
My approach to newborn photography is intentionally simple.
I don’t believe your baby needs elaborate props or complicated poses to create an extraordinary portrait.
Your baby is already the focus. The tiny fingers. The soft eyelashes. The sleepy expressions. The newborn wrinkles. The way they naturally curl into your arms.
Keeping the session refined and natural allows us to focus on those details while creating imagery that feels timeless rather than trendy.
Your Baby Sets the Pace
One of the most important things I tell parents before a newborn session is:
There is no need to rush. A session may include several feedings, diaper changes, soothing, cuddling, and plenty of time simply being held.
That’s not wasted time. That’s newborn life. And sometimes those quiet moments produce the photographs parents love most. A baby peacefully resting against mom. Dad comforting a fussy little one. A sibling giving one more kiss.
Those moments can’t be scheduled and they don’t need to be. They simply need to be noticed.
The Nursery Won’t Always Look Like This
Someday the changing pad will disappear from the dresser.
The diapers will be gone. The tiny onesies will be packed away. The crib will turn into a toddler bed, and the nursery you spent months preparing will slowly become something new.
That’s part of why I love photographing families at home during the newborn stage.
We’re not just photographing your baby.
We’re documenting the home you brought them home to—the nursery, the rocking chair, the tiny clothes in the drawer and all the ordinary little pieces of life that surrounded those first weeks together.
