When you look through a newborn photography gallery, you may notice something unexpected. Not every photograph has everyone looking at the camera. In fact, some of my favorite family portraits are the ones where parents aren’t looking at me at all.
They’re looking at their baby.
They’re studying those tiny features.
They’re smiling at each other.
They’re simply holding their newest little love exactly as they would at home.
And there is a reason for that.
Connection Is More Beautiful Than Perfection
Traditional family portraits often ask everyone to look directly at the camera and smile. There’s certainly a place for that photograph, and I always make sure families have a beautiful portrait looking at the camera if that’s something they want.
But when I’m photographing a newborn session (or even any of my sessions), I’m often more interested in what happens when you forget I’m there.
Because that’s where the real emotion lives.
The way a mother instinctively brings her baby closer. The way a father looks down at his newborn with complete wonder. The way both parents pause for a moment because they can’t quite believe this little person is finally here. I love the feelings, the laughs.
Those moments can’t be manufactured. They have to be felt.
Your Baby Is the Most Important Person in the Room
During your newborn session, I want your attention to be where it naturally belongs: on your baby. You don’t need to perform for the camera. You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to worry about whether your smile looks perfect.
Instead, I may ask you to simply look at your baby.
Look at their face.
Hold their little hand.
Kiss their forehead.
Whisper something to them.
Take a moment to really see them.
The photograph happens around that connection.
The Beauty of Being Present
One of the things I love most about newborn photography is that it gives parents permission to slow down.
New parenthood can feel like a whirlwind. There are feedings, diaper changes, visitors, sleepless nights, and an endless list of things to do.
Then, for a few hours, you get to simply sit with your baby. You get to notice the details.
The little nose.
The soft cheeks.
The way their fingers curl.
The way they fit against your chest.
Sometimes a session becomes a little pause in the middle of those exhausting and beautiful early days. And I want your photographs to preserve that feeling.
Looking at Your Baby Creates More Emotional Portraits
There is something inherently emotional about seeing a parent look at their child. You can see the love without anyone saying a word.
A photograph of a mother looking down at her newborn tells a story. A father gently holding his baby tells another. Parents looking at each other while holding their child tells an entirely different story.
These photographs aren’t simply portraits. They’re relationships captured in a single frame. Years from now, you may not remember exactly what you were wearing or how you posed.
But you’ll remember the feeling of looking down at your baby and realizing, This is my child.
That’s the moment I want to preserve.
I Still Want the Portrait Where You Look at the Camera
Looking at your baby doesn’t mean we skip the classic family portrait.
There is absolutely something special about having everyone together, looking at the camera.
That is the photograph your child may one day see hanging on the wall.
It’s the image that captures everyone as they were in that exact chapter of your family’s story.
But I believe your gallery should contain more than one type of photograph.
I want the beautiful portrait.
I also want the photograph that feels like you.
The one that makes you stop and remember exactly what it felt like to hold your newborn.
Your Baby Won’t Always Be This Small
One day, those tiny fingers will become little hands reaching for you.
The newborn curls will change.
Those sleepy expressions will become mischievous smiles.
You’ll watch your baby grow through every stage, and you’ll probably wonder how time moved so quickly.
When you look back at these photographs, I want you to remember more than what your family looked like.
I want you to remember how completely you loved this little person.
That is why I ask you to look at your baby.
Because sometimes the most beautiful photograph is the one where you aren’t looking at the camera at all.
You’re looking at everything.
