Welcoming your baby home is one of the most beautiful milestones your family will experience. An in-home newborn session is a relaxed, natural way to capture those first days together — right where your memories are being made. To help you feel prepared and at ease, I’ve put together my top tips for getting your home (and your heart) ready for your session.
But is it really worth the investment? Let’s talk about why the answer is absolutely yes.
1. Keep It Simple with Outfits
Neutrals and soft tones always photograph beautifully. Think cozy knits, flowy dresses, and a simple onsie or sleeper for baby. Avoid busy patterns and logos, and choose comfortable clothing that lets you snuggle freely. I am always happy to bring dresses and tops from the studio wardrobe with me to your home. I can also create a style guide for your family if you want to shop for new items on your own.
2. Open the Curtains
Natural light makes all the difference. On session day, open blinds and curtains in the rooms you’d love me to photograph in. We want all the beautiful natural light to flood in through the windows.
3. Feed Baby Beforehand
A full tummy usually means a sleepy, content baby — perfect for photos. Don’t worry if baby needs to feed again during the session; we’ll take breaks as needed. These moments are part of your story too and I am happy to photograph those moments as well.
4. Don’t Worry About Perfection
Life with a newborn is wonderfully messy — and that’s the beauty of it. Your session is about capturing connection, not perfection. Whether your baby is snoozing peacefully or wide awake, I’ll document this season just as it is.
5. Tidy Up
If it is out, then it may be photographed. I recommend removing any items on tabletops, dressers, nightstands that you may not want photographed, such as water bottles, trash, stacks of mail, or recent amazon deliveries!
6. Include Siblings (and Pets!)
Siblings and even furry family members are absolutely welcome to join in. I’ll help guide big brothers and sisters in ways that feel natural and fun, while keeping the focus on those sweet new-baby snuggles.
